テーマ：「最も影響を受けた人・物」について考える
自分の考え方に影響を与えたと捉えられる、人や事柄について、思い当たる節はありますか？それらは、一体どのような変化をあなたにもたらしたのでしょうか？英語と日本語の両セッションを通し、楽しく考えてみましょう。

今回のテーマは、第二言語で表現することが難しいと思われる内容ではないでしょうか。言語使用の目的や目標は人それぞれですので、今回のワークショップでは、参加者一人ひとりがそれぞれの目標に合った言語の選択を出来るよう工夫していくつもりです。人によっては、対話の導入部は英語（日本語）で話すことが容易であっても、内容が深まるにつれて、日本語（英語）で表現したいと感じられるかもしれません。

対話の中核は、表題のテーマに沿った内容ですが、セッション全般を通して、常に言葉の使用という観点を心に置きながら、自身がどの程度の思考であれば第二外国語で伝えられるのかということを観察していくことも、面白いプロセスだと思います。また、自分の考えを組み立てるのに、どのような言語を使用しているのか、選択言語が思考に影響をもたらすのかということも同時に洞察できるかもしれません。

注）　セッションは日本語と英語の両方で行われます。少なくとも、他の参加者の話を真剣に聴けるレベルのリスニング力が、英語・日本語とも必要となります。

Theme： Thinking about ‘Most influential people and things’
Can you name key people and things that have influenced your way of thinking? In what ways have they changed you? Let’s think together and collaborate through English and Japanese sessions.

This is certain to be a challenging topic to address using a second language. I would like all participants to set their own goals for the way they will use language in this third workshop. For some people, the introductory part of our dialogue will be easier to deliver in their second language, and once contents are further developed, recourse to the first language may well be required.

While the focus will remain on the guiding topic, you should remain mindful of the way you use language, and throughout the sessions you will be able to survey and more fully appreciate the extent to which you are able to convey thoughts in first and second languages. You should also observe in which language you develop your thoughts and the influence of language on the thinking process.

Note Sessions are in both Japanese and English and a genuine interest in Japanese (listening skill) is required.

研究学園駅近くの、木造建ての古民家で開催された第２回ワークショップのテーマは「働くこと」。始めに、自己紹介を兼ね英語にて、各自職歴や現在の仕事について語りあいました。この導入セッションの後、古民家前の庭で米の脱穀作業を試み、異なる分野、時代、背景における様々な形の「働くこと」にそれぞれ思いを巡らせました。

The theme of the second workshop, in a heritage style wooden Japanese cottage near Kenkyu Gakuen Station, was ‘working’. We introduced ourselves in English by giving an account of our previous and current occupations. After this brief introductory session, we gathered in the cottage garden and learned about rice threshing – a traditional activity which gave us an excellent opportunity to explore our thoughts about various types of work in different fields, times, and at differing levels.



幸運にも、予報されていた雨はワークショップが終わりに近づくまでやって来ませんでした。時折吹きつける強い風に、籾殻ばかりでなく我々も飛ばされかねないということで、一通りの作業終了後、早々に屋内に引き上げました。その後対話の焦点を、働く動機や意味、将来どのように働いていきたいか、ということに移し、対話を重ねていきました。

Fortunately, the forecasted rain did not arrive until the time the workshop was due to end. However, occasionally strong gusts of wind blew not only rice shells but nearly us from the garden, so we scurried back inside. We continued the session with a shift of focus towards the motivation behind our work, its meaning, and the work we intended in the future.

「英語のセッション中、自分を的確に表現しきれていないと感じる場面がありましたが、それによって自分が本当に言いたいことについてよく考えることが出来ました。日本語のセッション時にさらに思考を深めることができ、自身の思考方法について考える良いきっかけとなりました。」

‘During the English session, I felt a certain limitation when expressing myself, which made me think more about what I really want to say. I could further develop my thoughts in the Japanese session and deepen my understanding of the way I think.’

あなたにとって働くとは？働く目的や喜びとは？
英語と日本語の両セッションを通し、楽しく考えてみましょう。

今回のワークショップでは、かつて日本でみられた伝統的な農作業を体験します。木製の足踏み脱穀機と唐箕を使用し、お米の収穫の最終段階にあたる脱穀と唐箕作業を行います。昔ながらの収穫作業を体験した後、英語と日本語での対話を中心とした話し合いに移ります。

Theme： Thinking about ‘Working’
What does work mean to you? What is your purpose and enjoyment in working?
Let’s think together and collaborate through English and Japanese sessions.

We begin this workshop by experiencing one of the Japanese traditional farming activities. By using a wooden threshing machine with a foot tread and a winnower, we will thresh and fan the rice grains, an activity comprising the last cycle of the rice harvest. After sampling this stage of farmers’ work from times gone by, English and Japanese dialogue based sessions will follow.

Note Second session is in both Japanes and English and a genuine interest in Japanese (listening skill) is required.

晩秋とは思えないほど暖かな日曜日。万博記念公園駅前で全員集合、学校のシャトルバスでつくばインターナショナルスクールへ。途中窓から筑波山が見えないかと目を凝らしてみたものの、辺りはすっぽりと薄霞に覆われ、山の端さえも識別できませんでした。

It was an unexpectedly warm Sunday for the late Autumn. We met at Bampaku Kinen Koen station and headed to the Tsukuba International School by shuttle bus. On the way, we craned our necks to see Mt Tsukuba but a haze lay over the mountain and we could not discern even its faint edge.

‘The day provided opportunities to explore deeper into my thoughts about the relationship between foreign languages and myself, as well as to consider other people’s involvement in foreign countries beyond the theme of “learning”. The session slots, where everyone created dialogues in English and Japanese, by no means an ordinary practice to some, was very instructive.’



ランチには、近隣のフレンチカフェレストランから取り寄せた新鮮な野菜のサラダ、キッシュ、ポテトグラタン、白身魚とアサリのトマトソース炒め、春巻き、焼きたてのパンとスコーン。校長先生の粋な計らいでスパークリングワインも登場。お腹がいっぱいになった後は、校長先生の案内による学校見学と雑木林の散策で腹ごなしをしました。

For lunch, we had plenty of fresh vegetables, quiche, potato gratin, fish and clam in tomato sauce, spring rolls and freshly baked bread and scones made by a local French Cafe Restaurant. Sparkling wine was added to the feast (thanks to the principal) so our faces were as shiny as the strong Autumn sun light. After satisfying our appetite, we had a guided school tour conducted by the principal followed by a quick walk in the woodland.
